Julio Cesar studied percussion in both languages: classical and popular. He acquired the classical knowledge from a period as student of the Conservatório de Tatuí, a school located in São Paulo city, Brazil. His teacher was Luis Marcos Caldana. The popular knowledge he acquired from an icon of Brazilian music – also his father – Osvaldinho da Cuíca.

He has played with renowned artists from the music scene, such as Living Colour, Yoko Ono, Clayton Cameron, Vera Figueiredo, Filó Machado, Eduardo Gudin, Alessandro Penezzi, Zé Barbeiro, Alexandre Ribeiro, Sílvia Góes, Arismar do Espírito Santo, Yamandú Costa, Vinícius Dorin, François Lima, Raul de Souza, Maestro Laércio de Freitas, Benjamim Taubkin, Madhup Mudgal e grupo (Índia), Dona Ivone Lara, Maria Bethânia, Jair Rodrigues, Luciana Mello, Jonny Alf, João Donato, Thaíde, Zeca Pagodinho, Luis Carlos da Vila, Zé Renato, Cristina Buarque, Roberta Miranda, Reinaldo, Germano Mathias, Roberto Silva, Wilson Moreira, Fabiana Cozza, Ney Lopes, Nelson Sargento, Leci Brandão, Royce do Cavaco, Almir Guineto, Moacyr Luz, Celso Viáfora, Ná Ozzeti, Osvaldinho do Acordeon, Rildo Hora, Neguinho da Beija Flor, Noca da Portela, Thobias da Vai-Vai, Tony Tornado, Demônios da Garoa, Emicida, among others.

Julio joined Rafael Y Castro to form the percussion duo “A Moda da Casa”. Together they teach clinics covering some of the expertise from outstanding music masters, by applying these contents in new percussion pieces, making use of their own influences and wide percussion concepts.

He's been giving classes and conducting percussion workshops since 1998. Currently, Julio Cesar plays and records with several Brazilian artists, while working on his own music.

Instruments of Samba

Available dates

“Instruments of Samba” is a project created by Julio Cesar. This clinic represents to musicians and music students the richness of the Brazilian percussion scene through one of the most widely known musical genre, the Samba.

Using Loop technology, Julio explains the techniques applied on each percussion instrument, while he overdubs their sounds, creating in a short period of time a great “batucada de samba”, with exciting and engaging arrangements.

In this case, the participants can appreciate in real time the function of different tones and instruments, and how they dialog with each other. It is the way Julio offers to those who are present the sensations of being at a recording studio, where many percussionists are playing together, and even the feeling of listening to a full Samba School.

Moreover, participants gain fundamental notions of these percussion instruments. All of this becomes possible with the help of technology, and undeniable talent of this remarkable musician.

À moda da Casa

Available dates

This project was created by Julio Cesar and Rafael Y Castro. It is a mix between clinic and performance, where each percussionist accesses his own musical language within the percussion universe, in order to arrive at a similar approach to subjects within the realm of Brazilian music. The proposal of the Duo is to teach clinics covering some of the expertise from outstanding music masters, by applying these contents in new percussion pieces, making use of their own influences and wide percussion concepts, such as Grupo PIAP, Duo Ello, Samba School, and specially Osvaldinho da Cuíca’s compositions.

Working with the Duo’s compositions, the proposal of this project is to create new musical possibilities, applying musical patterns added to the liberty of improvisation, as well as including the use of instruments already known in Brazilian rhythmic groups, such as the repinique from extraordinary Samba Schools.

There is the possibility of performing and adaptation of pieces composed for contemporary percussion with new arrangements.
